At its most basic, they turned a figure of compassion into a figure of hostility who blesses exactly the harshness that he criticized in the Gospel; this change developed more slowly, across decades as opposed to months, yet it remains unsettling in the same ways, a bewildering emotional blow for many of us.
A Toxic Christianity Takes Hold

The evident and direct fact that the Savior of the gospels calls for a type of extreme compassion focused on the impoverished has consistently rendered Christian religion something of a controversial faith: appealing to the populace, but owing to its intrinsic extremism demanding to be restrained. During the 1950s it was controlled by dilution – The Protestant faith was so widespread that it basically sanctified existing conditions.
A Battle for the Best Among Us
