Pat Cummins has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

Australia's selection chief the selector has stated that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on 21 November in the WACA.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and felt positive about the prospects of participating.

"It's clear that time is getting short and there are permutations involved, aside from the physical problem, but additional elements," he commented.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a major part. Hopefully starting in Perth. If not, we'll reassess."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India last month after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss several home seasons in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the Ashes.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from the national team for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "small issue and stated that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the initial game as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games regardless. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we opted to take a cautious route."
