An defence official has stated that the Ministry of Defence is currently examining the potential threats associated with Chinese cars, while staff have been told to refrain from talking about classified matters in all vehicles.
Safety Guidance for Defence Staff
In a recent appearance on LBC, Luke Pollard commented on claims that MoD officials have been told not to talk about secret information while riding in China-made cars.
He said that the ministry is “investigating” cars from China within its vehicle pools, but stressed that safety is a concern in all modern cars.
Our department has a collection of tens of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones account for a very small number.
But regardless of if you’re driving a vehicle from China or a car from another country, our instruction to our staff is not to plug MoD technology into their vehicle, to avoid having conversations at a classified classification in any kind of vehicle, due to the increasing threats of eavesdropping that exist in all automobile, to only have those secret conversations in secure locations. That’s a prudent and sensible thing for anyone concerned about safety.
When it was suggested that it would be wise for the MoD to cease using every cars from China, the minister responded: That is exactly what we are looking into at the present time.”
Broader Security Context
This revelation follows claims from Scandinavian countries have alerted the United Kingdom to the existence of multi-purpose kill switches in Chinese electric buses, which could allow China to switch off public transport and cause chaos to public transit.
Additionally, a Russian intelligence vessel has been directing laser beams at RAF aircrew, described as a “extremely risky” act by government representatives.
