Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for an extended period when multiple of them entered the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend floated over the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a approach that remains highly susceptible to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and participants so that these practices become not financially viable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
